To Reginald's befuddlement, they are transported to an alien space ship.\" onclick=\"plusSlides(1, 'GALLERY_Modal_RD')\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"GALLERYtitle\">Reading Days #1: Reginald Powers: Octopus Librarian in &#8220;Itemized Deductions and Photon Torpedoes&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYcaption\">Reading Days was envisioned as a gag comic strip with plenty of references, but it was important to establish some foundational characters. Reginald, the ocotopus, is a reference to a stuffed animal we had in the children&#8217;s library a long while ago. It was a similar color, but Reginald&#8217;s hue is mainly based on the library&#8217;s color (<font style=\"color:#b30737;\">#b30737 in hex<\/font>). Gina, the goose, is a reference to the infamous goose population hanging around the rear of the library.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYslides\">\n<div class=\"GALLERYnumber\">\n            2 \/ 40\n          <\/div>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hegganlibrary.org\/YS\/comics\/RD\/2.png\" class=\"GALLERYslideimg\" alt=\"Catherine of Wuthering Heights tells her dad that she's interested in Heathcliff. Her father disapproves, citing antics like pulling pranks on the milk man. Catherine is confused until she sees Heathcliff flip a garbage can.\" onclick=\"plusSlides(1, 'GALLERY_Modal_RD')\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"GALLERYtitle\">Reading Days #2: Meowthering Heights<\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYcaption\">The first novel reference in Reading Days was <a href=\"https:\/\/goco.ent.sirsi.net\/client\/en_US\/heggan\/search\/results\/?ln=en_US&#038;lm=ALL&#038;q=wuthering+heights&#038;lm=HEGGAN&#038;rw=0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"linkalpha\">Wuthering Heights<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/goco.ent.sirsi.net\/client\/en_US\/heggan\/search\/results?qu=AUTHOR%3D%22Bronte%2C+Emily.%22&#038;lm=HEGGAN&#038;lm=ALL\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"linkalpha\">Emily Bronte<\/a>. Not sure why that was my first pull but it was. Maybe it was because I wanted to make a reference to Heathcliff the cat as soon as possible&#8230; yeah, that was probably it.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYslides\">\n<div class=\"GALLERYnumber\">\n            3 \/ 40\n          <\/div>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hegganlibrary.org\/YS\/comics\/RD\/3.png\" class=\"GALLERYslideimg\" alt=\"A robot with glasses is introduced. The robot asks why he was programed with a visual impairment.\" onclick=\"plusSlides(1, 'GALLERY_Modal_RD')\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"GALLERYtitle\">Reading Days #3: Reginald Powers: Octopus Librarian in &#8220;00\/10 Vision&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYcaption\">At the time this comic was published in the newsletter I had built our children&#8217;s library a big robot like Max Powers here (our young patrons named him Mr. Librario). This is also the introduction of Doctor Science Cat, a character I frankly get way more mileage out of. By the way, I missed an opportunity with the title of this comic. When I was asked to do a new strip for the newsletter I wanted to give myself a framing device with a lot of freedom. The setting of Lightyears is the Demeter, a ship that could be designed to be modular, meaning I could introduce different spaces to allow for gags on different topics. The setting also allows for some story event if I am so inclined, I just need to have the crew encounter something, like pirates or something.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYslides\">\n<div class=\"GALLERYnumber\">\n            2 \/ 9\n          <\/div>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hegganlibrary.org\/YS\/comics\/LY\/2.png\" class=\"GALLERYslideimg\" alt=\"Captain Ripley Lightyears welcomes Intern Moon to the ship and offers to give her a tour. That&#8217;s why you don&#8217;t often see a setup like this in something like a newspaper comic strip. My local art store stopped selling non-photo blue pencils around the time I made this comic and started selling non-photo purple. Non-photo blue allows your pencil marks not to be picked up when you scan in black and white. I couldn&#8217;t get the purple to do the same. I don&#8217;t recommend doing that because anything you do will be an inside joke. Case in point, if you haven&#8217;t played Dave the Diver, Dave finds mayo while diving deep under sea.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYslides\">\n<div class=\"GALLERYnumber\">\n            7 \/ 9\n          <\/div>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hegganlibrary.org\/YS\/comics\/LY\/7.png\" class=\"GALLERYslideimg\" alt=\"Captain Lightyears leads Intern Moon to the engine room. Moon asks if she's just avoiding work. Ripley replies that she runs a very professional opperation. We then see the engine crew sitting around playing poker.\" onclick=\"plusSlides(1, 'GALLERY_Modal_LY')\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"GALLERYtitle\">Lightyears #7<\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYcaption\">Have you noticed that uniforms and rooms are color coded? That made designing the engine room a little tricky because there needed to be lights and doodads with contrasting colors.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYslides\">\n<div class=\"GALLERYnumber\">\n            8 \/ 9\n          <\/div>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hegganlibrary.org\/YS\/comics\/LY\/8.png\" class=\"GALLERYslideimg\" alt=\"Captain Lightyears returns to the bridge and asks A-1H@Z3N if she missed anything. We see Thea with her paw on the air lock button, ejecting a crew member in a space suit. A-1 answers that Ripley missed Thea's supper time.\" onclick=\"plusSlides(1, 'GALLERY_Modal_LY')\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"GALLERYtitle\">Lightyears #8<\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYcaption\">This robot is named A1-H@Z3N, or A1 for short. He&#8217;s named after the father of modern optics, Hasan Ibn al-Haytham. Anyway, cats can get real creative in their mayhem when they want to be fed, right?<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYslides\">\n<div class=\"GALLERYnumber\">\n            9 \/ 9\n          <\/div>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hegganlibrary.org\/YS\/comics\/LY\/9.png\" class=\"GALLERYslideimg\" alt=\"A dog visits Reginald Powers at the library and asks for a book. He doesn't remember the title but it had a gray cover. Reginald is gone and can be seen through a window in a space suit.\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"GALLERYtitle\">Lightyears #9<\/div>\n<div class=\"GALLERYcaption\">Reginald&#8217;s redesign for Lightyears took some experimentation. Using his original circle design was tempting, but incorporating the Demeter uniform was tricky and not something I&#8217;d likely be able to fit into all panels. Then there was the question of his hands and number of legs.
