According to the New York Times Best Seller List, James A. Michner’s The Source was the best selling book in America on the day that the library was founded. It debued on the list on October 10th, 1965 and held the number one position until May 8th, 1966, where it was succeeded by Jaquelin Susann’s Valley of the Dolls which remained at the top until November 13th.

The #1 hit song of the week on the day the library was founded was These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra. The Ballad of the Green Berets would go on to be the top #1 song of the year.
